About this app
Why RPMOTE
If you manage infrastructure for multiple clients or environments, you already know the pain: credentials in a spreadsheet, RDP files scattered across the desktop, a dozen PuTTY windows with no idea which one is which, and zero visibility into what's actually running where. RPMOTE was built to fix that — a single, locally encrypted vault holding every connection you own, organized by client, reachable in two clicks, and wrapped in an interface that makes the day-to-day grind of remote administration feel less like a chore.
Everything lives on your machine. Nothing is synced to a third-party cloud. You hold the only key.
🔐 A Vault, Not a Spreadsheet
Every credential, host, and snippet you save is protected by a locally encrypted vault:
- AES-256 encryption for all stored connection details, credentials, and snippets
- Master password protection, derived with PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 — no plaintext secrets ever touch disk
- Encrypted export/import, so you can move your entire connection library to a new machine safely
- One-key lock (
Ctrl+L) to instantly seal the vault when you step away - A distinctive security-gate unlock animation — successful logins seal with a shield motion into the workspace; failed attempts get a sharp red/cyan glitch and an automatic refocus on the password field
There is no password recovery by design. You are the only one who holds the key to your own data.
🌐 One App, Every Protocol
RPMOTE speaks the full range of protocols an admin actually uses in the field:
| Protocol | What it's for |
|---|---|
| SSH | Full-featured terminal sessions to Linux/Unix hosts |
| SFTP | Secure remote file management |
| FTP | Legacy file transfer support |
| RDP | Windows remote desktop, embedded or external |
| iDRAC | Dell server out-of-band management consoles |
| NAS | Synology and similar network-attached storage web consoles |
| Azure PowerShell | Microsoft 365 and Azure cloud administration |
Every connection type is configured, tested, and launched from the same interface — no more switching between five different tools to manage one client's stack.
💻 A Terminal Built for Real Work
The SSH terminal isn't a bare-bones text box — it's built to handle the tools admins actually run:
- Full ANSI support for flawless rendering of colors and complex TUI applications (
htop,vim,k9s, and friends) - Meslo Nerd Fonts pre-integrated for perfect icon rendering in prompts and status bars
- Smart font scaling (
Ctrl +/Ctrl -) with crisp, developer-focused typography - Real-time latency monitoring so you always know the health of your connection
- Live remote health tracking — background CPU, RAM, and disk usage sampling for connected hosts, visible at a glance
Ultimate Shell Sync
RPMOTE automatically installs and configures Starship and Zoxide on connected hosts, upgrading a stock shell into a fast, informative, modern one — and it's smart enough to detect prompt changes (like a sudo -i privilege switch) and silently re-apply shell sync so your prompt never breaks mid-session.
📂 Dual-Pane File Management
The integrated SFTP/FTP browser brings desktop-grade file management to remote hosts:
- Side-by-side local and remote views for natural drag-and-drop-style workflows
- Background transfers — upload and download without blocking the rest of your session
- Context-menu driven operations: upload, download, rename, delete, and navigate with a right-click
- Live transfer progress visible directly in the browser panel
🖥️ Seamless Remote Desktop
RDP sessions are treated as first-class citizens, not an afterthought:
- Embedded ActiveX mode — run RDP sessions directly inside application tabs, alongside your terminals
- External mode for maximum compatibility when you need the traditional RDP client experience
- Secure auto-login, passing saved credentials straight into the session with no manual re-entry
☁️ Azure PowerShell, Client by Client
For consultants managing multiple Microsoft 365 tenants, RPMOTE includes a full Azure PowerShell workspace:
- Client-aware profiles — save the tenant, sign-in UPN, cloud, subscription, and preferred workload per client, so switching between customers is instant
- One local PowerShell session, many workloads: Exchange Online, Microsoft Graph, Azure resources, Microsoft Teams, Security & Compliance, or unrestricted PowerShell — multiple workloads can stay connected simultaneously
- Three auth modes: Interactive (for MFA/admin use), Device Code (for restricted sign-in environments), and Service Principal (for unattended automation)
- A library of prepared commands — mailbox lookups, archive checks, user profiles and license reports, Azure resource and VM inventory, Teams user data, and Purview policy/search reporting — all searchable, parameterized, previewed, and editable before they ever run
- Never a locked-down sandbox — the prepared scripts are a head start, not a cage; the full PowerShell command line is always available underneath
🛠️ Built for Daily Ops
- Command snippets — save frequently used bash commands and fire them off with one click, backed by a built-in library of common admin commands
- Screenshot capture built directly into the app for quick documentation and support tickets
- Embedded web browser tab for jumping straight into web-based management consoles (iDRAC, NAS admin panels, and similar) without leaving the app
- 7 hand-crafted themes — Dark, Nebula, Catppuccin, Tokyo Night, Matrix, Dot Wave, and Aurora — each with its own animated dashboard backdrop
📊 Operations Dashboard
Instead of opening the app to a blank list of saved hosts, RPMOTE opens to a live operations view:
- At-a-glance counts of saved connections, total clients, active sessions, and protocol mix
- An interactive client topology — every client rendered as a node in a live, animated network graph radiating from a central hub, with flowing data-line animation showing which connections are active in real time
- Drag-to-arrange node positions that persist between sessions, so you can lay out your workspace exactly how your brain organizes your clients
- Zoom controls (
Ctrl +/Ctrl -/Ctrl 0) to fit anywhere from a handful of clients to a hundred on screen at once

🧰 Under the Hood
RPMOTE is a native Windows desktop application built on a modern, battle-tested stack:
- PyQt6 for a fast, native-feeling interface
- Paramiko for rock-solid SSHv2 connectivity
- cryptography for AES-256 vault encryption
- PyWin32 for deep Windows RDP/ActiveX integration
It ships as a self-contained Windows installer — no separate runtime to install, no cloud account to create, no subscription. Your vault, your machine, your data.
**RPMOTE** — built for the people who keep the infrastructure running.
